Become a volunteer!

Sweltering Cities is a people powered organisation. Everything we do, from events to research, to running the biggest survey on heat, health and homes in Australia, is done with the support of people like you. If you want to join us, whether that’s by organising in your community, helping power national campaigns, or sharing your powerful heatwave story, sign up here!

Building Powerful Communities

Too often, people feel like the impact of extreme heat is an individual problem, when in fact thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people are facing the same struggles. Organising means connecting with people who are facing the same hot homes, hot suburbs, and hot workplaces, to demonstrate that people care and demand change.

If you want to work in your community to build power and win local, tangible heat solutions, and work with other communities to build national power, we would love to talk to you. We have on the ground organisers in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne, and are supporting community organising across the country.

Storytelling

Heatwaves aren’t just a day at the beach for most people, but that’s what makes the front page when hot weather breaks records. Our massive Summer Surveys reach thousands of people around the country and get national media attention, but we need your help to make sure your community is represented. You can help change the story of heat by helping us get the Summer Survey to more people, sharing your story for others to hear, speaking to people in your community or the media, or helping us with social media design or promotion.

Strategic Campaigns for Real-World Wins

As the national community voice for heat safety in Australia, we run powerful  campaigns for policies, funding and infrastructure that will have tangible benefits in communities. Our campaigns include Busted Bus Stops, Heat Safe Homes for Renters, Payments not Penalties, Cool Plan for Hot Suburbs, and Extreme Heat Awareness Day on the 4th of February. We are looking for keen volunteers to help out with Extreme Heat Awareness Day and beyond.

We’re a small organisation with a big impact. With your help we’ll change the story of rising temperatures, and grow the powerful campaigns and organising to win more liveable, equitable and sustainable communities.
